Chinese Cultural Spectacle Lights Up UN Nairobi as Dunhuang Heritage Takes Centre Stage in Global Dialogue
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) was transformed into a vibrant stage of colour, rhythm and cultural exchange on Tuesday as performers from China’s Gansu Province delivered a captivating showcase of Dunhuang-inspired music, dance and classical artistry during celebrations marking the International Day for Dialogue Among Civilizations.
The dazzling performance, which blended centuries-old artistic traditions with contemporary stagecraft, underscored China’s growing emphasis on cultural diplomacy and people-to-people exchanges as part of its broader efforts to strengthen international cooperation and mutual understanding among nations.
Presented by the Gansu Performance Company and its affiliate, Gansu Dance Troupe Co., Ltd., the cultural showcase attracted diplomats, government officials, United Nations representatives and invited guests, offering audiences a rare glimpse into one of China’s most treasured artistic legacies.
The programme was directed by renowned artistic director Li Xin and led by Zhou Wenshuai, with performances drawing inspiration from Dunhuang culture and the artistic heritage of the Tang Dynasty, a period widely regarded as one of the most cosmopolitan eras in Chinese history.
Dunhuang Heritage Comes Alive
The evening opened with the breathtaking performance titled Dunhuang Music and Dance, immediately immersing the audience in the rich visual and cultural world of the ancient Silk Road.

Dancers adorned in flowing costumes inspired by the famous Dunhuang murals recreated scenes reminiscent of the centuries-old frescoes found in the Mogao Caves, one of China’s most celebrated cultural treasures.
The performance featured Kang Qi, Xi Jiali, Yu Peixian, Zhao Anqi, Mao Shuaizhi, Mu Wei and Zhang Bo, whose synchronized movements and graceful choreography brought ancient stories and artistic traditions vividly to life.
Their performance established a powerful theme that would run througho ut the evening: the enduring ability of culture to transcend borders and connect civilizations.
Traditional Music Captivates Audience
Following the opening dance, acclaimed musician Wang Yuanying took centre stage with a solo pipa performance of Ambush from All Sides, one of the most iconic compositions in traditional Chinese music.
The performance showcased extraordinary technical precision and emotional depth, with the ancient string instrument producing dramatic sounds that captivated the audience and highlighted the sophistication of China’s classical musical traditions.
One of the evening’s most visually striking presentations followed shortly afterward.
Tang Dynasty • HuXuan Dance, performed by Xi Jiali, Zhao Anqi and Mao Shuaizhi, revived the famous spinning dance style that once flourished in the imperial courts of the Tang Dynasty.
The dancers executed rapid rotational movements with remarkable balance and elegance, symbolizing the cultural dynamism and international openness that characterized medieval Chang’an, then one of the world’s largest and most diverse cities.
The cultural journey continued with Qingbei Yue, performed by He Jing, Li Na and Wang Yuanying. The segment introduced audiences to reconstructed melodies inspired by ancient Dunhuang musical traditions, creating a serene and reflective atmosphere within the UN complex.
This was followed by Bliss, a Dunhuang Ancient Musical Instrument Ensemble performance that layered traditional sounds into a deeply meditative and immersive experience.
Grand Finale Celebrates Cultural Exchange
The programme concluded with the spectacular Feather & Rainbow Dance, a large-scale ensemble performance that combined vibrant colours, feathered costumes and expansive choreography.
The finale drew enthusiastic applause from attendees as performers celebrated the artistic richness of Dunhuang culture while reinforcing the event’s central message of harmony and intercultural dialogue.
Beyond the stage performances, the event carried significant diplomatic symbolism.
Chinese officials described the showcase as part of ongoing efforts to advance the Global Civilization Initiative and strengthen cultural cooperation under the China-Africa Year of Cultural and People-to-People Exchanges.
They emphasized the role of cultural engagement in fostering understanding, friendship and collaboration between nations in an increasingly interconnected world.
Culture, Sustainability and Global Cooperation
The event also extended beyond live performances through a screening of Tale of the Night, presented by the Hunan Provincial Film Administration and the Hunan International Communication Centre, highlighting contemporary Chinese storytelling through cinema.
Alongside the cultural programme, Zheng Degao, Vice President of the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design, shared insights into China’s implementation of the UN New Urban Agenda.
He highlighted the country’s rapid urban transformation and growing investment in renewable energy, noting that China’s installed wind and solar power capacity has now surpassed coal-fired generation capacity.
The development, he said, reflects China’s commitment to sustainable urban growth and environmental stewardship.
Meanwhile, Kenya’s Permanent Representative to UNON and UNEP, Ambassador Ida Odinga, underscored the importance of cultural understanding in promoting peace and reducing global tensions.
She called on nations to embrace diversity, strengthen dialogue and deepen international cooperation, describing cultural exchange as a powerful tool for building bridges between communities and civilizations.
As ancient Dunhuang melodies echoed through the halls of the United Nations in Nairobi, the event served as a vivid reminder that culture remains one of humanity’s most enduring languages—capable of connecting people across continents, histories and generations.
