Gachagua Ouster Plot Claims Explode as Former DP Alleges Ruto Planned His Removal Before 2022 Election

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made explosive allegations against President William Ruto, claiming that a Gachagua ouster plot was conceived long before the 2022 General Election and that their political alliance was merely a strategic arrangement aimed at securing votes from the Mt Kenya region.

Speaking during an interview with a local television station on Thursday, June 4, 2026, Gachagua alleged that despite public displays of unity during the campaign period and after taking office, plans to force him out of government had already been put in motion.

The former Deputy President said he gradually came to realize that the relationship between him and President Ruto had deteriorated much earlier than many Kenyans knew.

“We used to pretend in functions that we were together, but we were no longer together. The decision to hound me out of office was made before we were elected, and I came to realise it after a while,” Gachagua claimed.

The remarks are among the strongest statements yet from the former Deputy President regarding his fallout with the Head of State.

Gachagua Ouster Plot Claims Linked to Mt Kenya Vote Strategy

According to Gachagua, President Ruto did not genuinely want him as his running mate but ultimately settled on him because of his political influence in the vote-rich Mt Kenya region.

The former Deputy President argued that his ability to mobilize support across the region made him a critical asset in the Kenya Kwanza campaign.

He claimed that before the elections, there were two rival camps within the coalition—one supporting him and another backing then Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki for the deputy president position.

“In his heart, he wanted Kindiki to be the deputy president, but he observed and noted that Kindiki had no capacity or influence to gather the mountain region’s votes. On the other hand, he saw that Gachagua had the ability and the capacity to gather the mountain votes to help him become president,” he stated.

The allegations paint a picture of a political partnership driven more by electoral calculations than mutual trust, raising fresh questions about the internal dynamics that shaped the Kenya Kwanza ticket.

Kindiki Named in Gachagua Ouster Plot Claims

Gachagua further alleged that Kithure Kindiki was persuaded to step aside from pursuing the deputy presidency after receiving assurances that he would be rewarded after the election.

According to the former Deputy President, Kindiki was promised a senior position in government, including the powerful Interior Ministry docket.

More controversially, Gachagua claimed that Kindiki’s future role was linked to a broader strategy aimed at removing him from office.

“Ruto urged Kindiki to step aside from the ambitions, promising him that he would make it up to him after the elections. He promised Kindiki the Interior Ministry, saying he would count on his support to remove me from office,” Gachagua alleged.

The claims have not been independently verified, and there was no immediate response from either President Ruto or Kindiki at the time of publication.

Gachagua Says His Independence Triggered Fallout

As the Gachagua ouster plot claims continue to dominate political discussions, the former Deputy President insists that his troubles began because he was unwilling to blindly support every government decision.

He accused the President of preferring loyalists who avoid questioning authority and suggested that his willingness to speak out on issues affecting ordinary citizens made him a target.

According to Gachagua, his approach to leadership often placed him at odds with powerful figures within government.

“Ruto wanted a ‘Yes, Sir’ kind of person,” he said.

The remarks underscore the deepening political divide between two leaders who once campaigned side by side and presented themselves as a united team.

Gachagua Ouster Plot Claims Intensify Political Tensions

The latest allegations are likely to fuel further political debate across the country as Kenya’s political landscape continues to evolve ahead of future electoral contests.

Analysts say the accusations provide a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes power struggles that may have shaped the formation and eventual breakdown of one of Kenya’s most influential political partnerships.

Whether the claims trigger fresh responses from senior government officials remains to be seen, but they have already reignited public discussion about the events that led to Gachagua’s dramatic exit from office.

For now, the Gachagua ouster plot claims have added another explosive chapter to an already turbulent political relationship, one that continues to captivate the nation and reshape conversations about power, loyalty, and succession within Kenya’s ruling establishment.
