Consistent Payments, Uninterrupted Works Signal Turnaround at Kipchoge Keino Stadium
The ongoing transformation of Kipchoge Keino Stadium that represents a significant shift from an abandoned shell to a world-class sporting facility.
Eldoret,April,23rd,2026- Construction at the Kipchoge Keino Stadium is progressing steadily, with workers on site reporting uninterrupted activity and consistent payment, marking a significant turnaround for a project that had long stalled.
For years, the facility in Eldoret had become symbolic of delays, with construction stopping and starting under previous contractors.
At its lowest point, the multi-billion shilling project was reduced to an open field, with local residents using the grounds for grazing livestock and drying maize.
Nancy Chebet, an excavator operator and resident, recalls that period vividly. She notes that the site had lost its purpose entirely, with goats, sheep and cattle roaming freely across what was meant to be a modern sporting facility. Today, however, she says the situation has changed dramatically.
Once complete, the stadium is expected to host over 15,000 spectators and feature tracks that meet international standards set by global athletics bodies.
Beyond sports, the project is also providing employment opportunities and injecting economic activity into the region.
With construction now in full swing and workers confirming timely pay and consistent operations, the long-delayed project appears firmly back on track.
The transformation from an abandoned grazing field to a world-class arena is now within reach, with the December 2026 completion deadline increasingly looking achievable.
According to Chebet, work is now continuous, with no missed days since she joined the project. She attributes this to improved management and a more reliable workflow, expressing confidence that the ongoing construction reflects serious progress.
“Since I started working here, there has been no day that I have missed work,” says Chebet. “Based on how I see my work and how it was before, I can assure everyone that the work going on here is good work and it will continue.”
The renewed momentum is also being felt across the wider sporting community.
Renowned athlete Ezekiel Kemboi has previously underscored the importance of the stadium, describing it as a crucial investment for athletes across the Rift Valley, Western and Nyanza regions.

“This stadium means a lot because in the North and South, we only have about three stadiums,” Kemboi explained. “This will help people from Nyahururu, Kisumu, Kakamega, Kitale, and even Baringo. It will change the profile of Eldoret and the region’s entire sporting economy,” he added.
He also highlighted that completion of the stadium will save many young and upcoming athletes the expenses of travelling back and forth to access standard training facilities.
