Kenya Airways partners with London Metropolitan University to Elevate Aviation Training

Kenya Airways (KQ) has taken a major step towards revolutionizing aviation education in Kenya through a strategic partnership with London Metropolitan University (London Met).

The landmark collaboration, formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the KQ Pride Centre, aims to enhance workforce development and industry innovation.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by key stakeholders from both organizations, government officials, and industry regulators. This partnership underscores Kenya Airways’ commitment to fostering industry-academic collaboration, strengthening employee skills, and driving innovation within the aviation sector.

By combining London Met’s world-class academic expertise with KQ’s industry leadership, the collaboration will provide specialized training programs, academic advancement opportunities, and access to cutting-edge aviation research.A Vision for the Future of Aviation.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Kenya Airways Group Managing Director and CEO Allan Kilavuka emphasized the transformative potential of the partnership.

“This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to innovation, excellence and the development of human capital. By investing in education and skills development, we are not only empowering our employees but also shaping the future of aviation in Kenya and beyond,” he stated.

Making his remarks,Tom Shivo, Chief Human Resources Director at Kenya Airways, highlighted the partnership’s focus on employee growth and career development.

“Our people are the backbone of our success. This partnership will provide our employees with the tools and knowledge they need to excel in their careers and contribute to the continued success of Kenya Airways. It’s an investment in our most valuable asset our talent,” he said.

To uphold the highest standards of education, KQ has applied for a tertiary institution license from the TVET Authority, which is currently under review. During this interim period, the specialized courses will be available exclusively to KQ employees.

Once government approval is secured, the program will extend to the broader public, offering accessible and affordable aviation training across Kenya and the region.

Aviation-Focused Degree Programs and Scholarships

As the partnership unfolds, Kenya Airways and London Met will introduce a suite of aviation-focused degree programs, including master’s degrees in Airline & Airport Corporate Management and Aviation Management in the Digital Age, as well as a bachelor’s program in Airline, Airport & Aviation Management.

To further support professional development, London Metropolitan University will offer a 70 percent scholarship for KQ employees pursuing aviation-related bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Additionally, the university will provide essential training resources, workshops, and certification programs.

There is also potential for the scholarship benefits to extend to employees’ family members.

The partnership aligns with Kenya Airways’ broader strategy to strengthen industry-academic ties, enhance workforce capabilities, and drive aviation sector innovation. It also reflects London Metropolitan University’s commitment to global collaboration and its mission to provide transformative educational experiences.

The MoU signing ceremony brought together representatives from the Ministries of Education, Transport, and Foreign Affairs, as well as industry regulators and the British High Commission.

This partnership marks the beginning of a new chapter in aviation education and workforce development, ensuring that the industry remains equipped to meet future challenges through continuous learning, innovation, and excellence.
