Kenya Airways Launches Direct Nairobi-Gatwick Flights, Boosting UK-Kenya Ties

Kenya Airways (KQ) has launched its inaugural direct flight from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to London’s Gatwick Airport (LGW), marking a significant milestone in its international expansion strategy. The first flight, KQ 108, took off at 23:45 EAT, opening a new gateway between Kenya and the United Kingdom and strengthening bilateral, economic, and tourism links.

The new service increases Kenya Airways’ UK frequencies to 10 weekly flights, complementing its long-standing operations to Heathrow Airport.

Gatwick, located south of Central London, offers added convenience for travelers in Southeast and South England, and boosts KQ’s connectivity options for both leisure and business travelers.

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano welcomed the development, emphasizing its potential to grow Kenya’s tourism sector. “The Nairobi-Gatwick route will drive up visitor numbers, promote diverse tourism experiences, and enhance multi-destination travel across Kenya,” said Miano.

“This will benefit hoteliers, tour operators, and entrepreneurs, with ripple effects in job creation and economic growth.”she added.

Miano further noted that the new route reinforces the Kenya-UK Economic Partnership Agreement, enhancing trade, investment, and people-to-people ties between the two nations.

Kenya Airways CEO Allan Kilavuka highlighted the airline’s vision beyond connectivity. “This isn’t just about flying to a new city; it’s about strengthening the ties that bind Kenya and the UK in trade, education, tourism, and investment.”

Principle Secretary for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Teresia Mbaika, lauded KQ’s growing impact on the economy.

“Aviation contributes Ksh 425 billion to our GDP and supports over 460,000 jobs. Kenya Airways is central to that success, facilitating exports, business, and tourism across continents.”she said.

Ed Barnett MBE, Deputy High Commissioner at the British High Commission, welcomed the initiative, saying it will enhance mobility, economic exchange, and deepen the long-standing partnership between the two countries.

The new Nairobi-Gatwick flights will operate three times weekly on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Bookings are now open via Kenya Airways’ official website, travel agents, and OTAs. Passengers will enjoy smooth connections to KQ’s vast African network through its Nairobi hub.
