7th edition of Eldoret city marathon launched in Eldoret

The 7th edition of the Eldoret City Marathon  officially launched on February 24, 2026, at the County Headquarters Square in Eldoret, setting the stage for the main race slated for April 26, 2026.

Held under the theme “Climate Action,” this year’s marathon places environmental conservation at the heart of its agenda.

Race Director Moses Tanui said the focus will be on promoting sustainable practices, tree planting initiatives and raising awareness on the impact of climate change.

Tanui expressed confidence that the 2026 edition will not only deliver thrilling competition but also champion environmental responsibility, aligning sport with sustainability.

The event is being staged in partnership with the Uasin Gishu County Government, reinforcing efforts to position Eldoret as a global athletics hub.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii noted that the marathon continues to grow in stature, attracting elite and upcoming athletes while boosting sports tourism and local economic activity.

The county government has committed a total of Sh15 million in prize money for the 2026 edition, underlining its support for the event and its determination to attract top-tier local and international athletes.

The county boss  said that in the spirit of strengthening athletics and infrastructure, the county is encouraged by the rapid modernization of Kipchoge Keino Stadium, whose construction progress currently stands at 33 per cent.

He noted that the upgraded facility will further enhance training and competition standards in the “County of Champions” and complement the marathon’s global ambitions.

The governor added that plans are also in place to fast-track the construction of the 64 Stadium and further reinforce the county’s athletics prowess.

Since its inception, the Eldoret City Marathon has built a reputation as one of Africa’s most competitive road races, offering lucrative prize money and drawing participation from top runners across the globe.
