Safaricom and Huawei Launch Kenya’s First Video Ring Back Tone Service
Innovation ushers in a new era of mobile entertainment and digital creativity
Nairobi, October 8, 2025 – Safaricom, in partnership with Huawei, has launched VybCall, Kenya’s first-ever Video Ring Back Tone (VRBT) service, marking a groundbreaking step in the evolution of mobile entertainment. The new feature, modelled on the iconic Skiza service introduced nearly two decades ago, enables customers to entertain callers with short-form video clips as they wait for their calls to be answered.
The introduction of VybCall positions Kenya as the first country in Africa to roll out the innovative service, blending technology and creativity to redefine everyday mobile experiences.
“At Safaricom, we are constantly exploring new ways to give our customers choice and control through targeted experiences,” said James Maitai, Safaricom’s Chief Technology and Information Officer. “The launch of Kenya’s first Video Ring Back Tone service is one way we are transforming daily moments creatively, reaffirming our commitment to innovation.”
The service is currently available on Safaricom’s Neon range, select Samsung and Oppo devices, and Xiaomi’s Redmi A series, with plans to extend to Vivo devices by the second quarter of 2026. Customers can activate the service by dialling *860# on compatible devices or through the Safaricom App and portal at vybcall.safaricom.com.
Huawei Kenya CEO Gavin Gao hailed the partnership as a win for Kenya’s digital ecosystem. “VybCall will empower local creatives and is part of Huawei’s ongoing efforts to collaborate with partners in driving innovation that enhances user experience and supports economic growth,” he said.
Since the launch of Skiza almost 20 years ago, Safaricom has continually adapted its products to align with evolving customer needs. With the rising global trend of short-form video content, VybCall represents the next chapter in personalising and monetising communication experiences.
The new platform not only enhances entertainment but also opens opportunities for content creators and businesses to market products through customised visual content transforming what used to be idle call time into a creative and promotional space.
The launch underscores Safaricom’s broader commitment to enriching customer experiences while cementing Kenya’s position as a leader in digital innovation across Africa.
