Tatu City Water Utility Clinches Top National Awards for Excellence and Governance

Tatu City Water and Sanitation Company (TATUWASCo) has been named the Best Private Utility Company of the Year and recognized for Excellence in Corporate Governance by the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB), affirming its leadership in delivering high-quality water and sanitation services in Kenya.

The prestigious awards follow a rigorous evaluation of utility providers across key performance indicators such as water coverage, quality, hours of supply, non-revenue water, revenue collection, metering ratio, cost coverage, and sanitation service provision.

Over the past 10 years, TATUWASCo has made substantial investments in water and sewerage infrastructure, including a 30 million-litre water storage tank, extensive trunk and distribution networks, and sewer systems that serve both public and private facilities.

These developments support a growing community of over 4,500 residents, 6,000 students, 100 businesses, and more than 25,000 daily workers within Tatu City.

“TATUWASCo’s success is rooted in long-term planning, strong technical execution, and a collaborative approach with regulators and customers,” said Caroline Cheptoo, Water Infrastructure Manager at Tatu City. “These awards reflect our entire team’s dedication to providing clean, safe, and reliable water every day.”

This recognition builds on previous national accolades received in 2022 and 2023, underscoring the company’s sustained commitment to transparency, governance, and innovation in utility services.

TATUWASCo operates within Tatu City, Kenya’s first operational Special Economic Zone (SEZ), which offers integrated infrastructure and essential services including 24/7 potable water supply, 99.7 percent electricity uptime via a 135MVA power substation, and over 70 kilometers of tarmacked roads. The city has also deployed more than 85,000 meters of fibre optic cable, supporting modern business and residential needs.

Looking ahead, TATUWASCo is expanding its infrastructure to accommodate growing demand. Plans include the rollout of smart metering technologies and enhanced wastewater treatment facilities to promote sustainable urban development.

Major businesses operating in Tatu City SEZ include Heineken, Emirates Logistics, Cold Solutions, Naivas, NCBA, Prime Bank, CCI Global, and Davis & Shirtliff, among others.

TATUWASCo continues to set the standard for private utility operations, reinforcing Tatu City’s reputation as a model for smart, inclusive, and well-governed urban development in Kenya.
