47-Year-Old Father Detained After 9-Year-Old Daughter Dies Following Alleged Assault in Kibra
Detectives in Kibra are holding a 47-year-old father accused of defiling and fatally assaulting his nine-year-old daughter in an incident that has shocked residents of the densely populated Nairobi sub-county.
The suspect, identified by police as Norman Swahili, was arrested on September 6, 2026, after police at Kibra Police Station received a distress call from members of the public reporting a severe child assault case at a home in the area.
Police officers, in the company of the local community policing team, responded immediately and rushed to the reported scene. On arrival, they found that the child had already been removed from the house. Neighbours informed them that the father had rushed the critically injured girl to Mbagathi Hospital for emergency treatment.
Officers followed the trail to Mbagathi Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed the worst — the minor had been pronounced dead on arrival and efforts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.
A preliminary physical examination conducted by medical officers revealed disturbing injuries consistent with a brutal assault. The child had multiple bruises and swellings distributed across her body and had lost an upper incisor tooth, indicating significant force had been used against her.
Doctors also established that the child had been sexually assaulted prior to her death.
Her body was transferred to the Nairobi Funeral Home, where it is currently preserved awaiting a full postmortem examination that will determine the exact cause of death and form part of the evidence to be presented in court.
Norman Swahili was placed under arrest at the hospital and escorted to Kibra Police Station, where he remains in custody as detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) finalize their investigation.
The DCI has condemned the incident, describing it as a grave betrayal of parental responsibility and a serious violation of children’s rights.
In a statement issued after the arrest, the DCI extended its condolences to the extended family of the deceased and warned that crimes targeting children will be met with the full force of the law.
“The public is strongly cautioned against all forms of violence, defilement and abuse, particularly against children. Such acts are a grave violation of the law and a betrayal of the trust and protection every child deserves,” the DCI said.
“The DCI will continue to pursue perpetrators of such heinous crimes, and stern lawful action will be taken against anyone found culpable.”
The case is expected to be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) once the postmortem is concluded, with the suspect likely to face charges of defilement and murder.
Residents of Kibra have called for justice for the minor, even as child welfare organizations renewed calls for stronger community-based child protection systems and prompt reporting of abuse cases within homes, which often go unnoticed until it is too late.
