Over 2,000 HR professionals sit CHRP exams as certification gains popularity
More than 2,000 Human Resource professionals across the country are sitting the August 2026 Certified Human Resource Professionals (CHRP) examinations, reflecting the growing importance of professional certification in Kenya’s Human Resource sector amid changing workplace demands.
The Human Resource Management Professionals Examinations Board (HRMPEB) has registered 1,809 candidates for the examinations running from August 5 to August 12. The candidates are the first to be examined under the fully revised CHRP curriculum, with examination centres located in Nairobi, Tharaka, Mombasa, Nakuru, Thika, Kisumu, Eldoret and Nanyuki.
The latest examination series marks the second CHRP sitting this year and comes as demand for certified HR professionals continues to rise in both the public and private sectors.
Government directive fuels enrolment
The increase in candidature follows a government directive making CHRP certification a mandatory requirement for entry into Human Resource positions in the public service. The qualification is also required for career progression among HR officers serving in ministries, State departments, constitutional commissions and State corporations.
The directive has significantly boosted enrolment, with many serving officers seeking certification to comply with the new requirements while enhancing their professional credentials.
HRMPEB Chief Executive Officer Margaret Nguu said the board is committed to ensuring the CHRP programme remains relevant to the needs of today’s workplace.
She said HRMPEB is working closely with the Institute of Human Resource Management (IHRM) to continuously review the curriculum so that it equips professionals with practical skills required in modern organisations.
Nguu noted that the certification should be viewed as a pathway for professional growth rather than a barrier to employment.
“Our role is to create a clear and accessible pathway that enables HR professionals to become more competent, marketable and effective in their workplaces. We encourage all qualified professionals to enrol without fear, provided their academic qualifications are verifiable,” she said.
Curriculum revised for changing workplace
The board says the revised curriculum responds to emerging workplace realities, including the growing use of artificial intelligence, digital transformation and changing workforce demographics.
To support implementation of the government directive, HRMPEB has partnered with the State Department for Human Capital Development to sensitise employees across government institutions on the importance of professional certification.
The awareness programme is targeting Human Resource departments in ministries, State corporations and other public institutions, encouraging officers to complete the three examination stages required for CHRP certification.
According to the board, the rising number of candidates also reflects increased awareness among HR practitioners who want to remain competitive as organisations embrace new technologies and evolving human capital management practices.
The examinations are expected to assess candidates’ understanding of contemporary Human Resource management while preparing a new generation of professionals capable of supporting reforms in Kenya’s public service and the wider labour market.
