How a simple click can cost you millions

The arrest of a 26-year-old university dropout in Tatu City for allegedly hacking Ksh11.4 million from a betting company is a warning to every internet user.

The suspect, a second-year IT dropout from the University of Meru, allegedly bypassed the firm’s security systems. Police recovered computers, a safe and a money-counting machine from his apartment. He told detectives, “This is what I do.”

But hackers don’t just target big companies. They target YOU.

Through phishing, they send fake emails, SMS and links that look like Safaricom, your bank, KRA, or a betting site. One click, and they steal your passwords, M-Pesa PIN and bank details.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations warns the public: Don’t click suspicious links.Verify the sender, never share your OTP, and report fraud.
