President Mourns Raila Odinga as a “Father of Democracy” and a True Patriot

President William Ruto has led the nation in mourning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a beacon of courage, a tower of principle, and the father of Kenya’s democracy. Odinga, 80, passed away in India following a cardiac arrest while receiving treatment.
In a heartfelt address to the nation, the President expressed deep sorrow over the loss, noting that Odinga’s passing marked the end of an era in Kenya’s political history. “We have lost a beacon of courage, a tower of principle, and a father of our democracy. Let us come together as he always asked us to do not as rivals, but as brothers and sisters bound by a shared destiny,” the President said.
He extended condolences to Odinga’s family, including Mama Ida Odinga, their children, and the wider Odinga family. “As a nation, we share in their grief. Mama Ida and the family have not only lost a husband and father but also a leader whose love for Kenya was boundless,” he added.
The President was joined by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa , Minority Leader Junet Muhammad, and other leaders who eulogized the late Odinga as a man whose commitment to justice, freedom, and democracy inspired generations. “His voice was that of conscience. His courage guided Kenya through defining moments in our history,” said the President.
Reflecting on Odinga’s political journey, the Head of State praised his lifelong dedication to public service, recalling how he always put the nation above personal or political interests. “In a political career spanning decades, Raila Odinga remained steadfast in his pursuit of a just and united Kenya. At critical moments in our nation’s journey, he always put Kenya first,” he said.
The President urged Kenyans to honor Odinga’s legacy by embracing unity and upholding the democratic values he fought for. “As we mourn, I call on all Kenyans to reflect on his towering legacy and the lessons he imparted through his life of service. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he concluded.
Odinga’s death has sent shockwaves across the country, with tributes pouring in from political leaders, citizens, and international allies who hailed him as a statesman and reformist who shaped Kenya’s democratic path.
