KRA Officers Arrested at JKIA for Soliciting KES 120K Bribe

Two Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers were arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for allegedly demanding a KES 120,000 bribe from a traveler in exchange for the release of confiscated goods.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) apprehended Mutava Lawrence and Timothy Momanyi, both deployed as customs officers at the airport, during a sting operation on Friday evening.

According to the EACC, the traveler refused to pay the bribe and reported the matter, prompting an immediate response from the anti-graft agency.

The two officers were caught red-handed while allegedly receiving the money.A subsequent search of the suspects’ vehicles led to the discovery of KES 297,000 in cash believed to be proceeds of corruption and a firearm.

The suspects are currently being held at Industrial Area Police Station as investigations continue.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to rooting out corruption in public service, particularly in key institutions like customs and border control.
